Myrtle Beach Golf Course Review
The Tradition Golf Club at Willbrook Plantation is an 18-hole championship facility that is considered to be one of the best golf values in the Myrtle Beach area. Located in Pawleys Island about 40 miles south of Myrtle Beach, this course features consistent playing conditions and presents course playability that allows players of all skill levels to enjoy a round here. Rated 4 stars out of 5 by Golf Digest Places to Play, the Traditions was designed by Ron Garl in 1995 and presents spacious fairways that often invite golfers to let it rip off the tee.
There are 30 sand hazards of various shapes and sizes in the form of waste bunkers and fairway or greenside traps, and water hazards come into play on 7 holes, with a couple forced carries. The par four 7th has an island green with a depth of 36 yards. An accurate drive to near the 120 yard marker will leave a short iron or wedge to this daunting green complex on this high handicap hole. The following par four plays to 430 yards from the tips with a long waste bunker to the right helping to make this the number one handicap on the course.
Number 14 features an approach over a pond (about 60 yards out) and the par three 15th also presents what amounts to an island green, with sand bunkers to the left of the putting surface also presenting challenge. The layout is tree lined throughout with plentiful landing zones, and with green complexes that are slightly raised and mildly undulating. The sand traps are mostly low-lipped and non-penal in nature, making this a player friendly experience for the novice golfer. There is generally plentiful recovery room greenside. Once on the putting surfaces golfers should eb able to score well as these bent grass greens put quick and true.
On property is a clubhouse with pro shop, restaurant/lounge serving breakfast and lunch menus, plus a changing area with lockers. The practice facility consists of a targeted grass range, short game area with sand bunker plus large putting green. The Chuck White Golf Academy is open year round, affording players with a variety of lessons and instructional programs. The carts are equipped with rear covers to protect clubs during inclement weather, and ball & club washers are also standard.
There are 5 sets of tee boxes that play to distances and slopes measuring 6875 yards/132 slope, 6313 yards/122 slope, 5728 yards/113 slope, 5189 yards/126 slope for women and 4106 yards with a slope of 106 for ladies playing from the forward tee areas. On course the Kirby marking System is in place (blocks every 25 yards fro 200-75) on the fairways and cart paths also have measurements at 100, 150 and 200 yards. 150 yard stakes are posted on all par fours and fives, and color coded flags indicate the day's front, middle or back hole locations.
The Tradition is priced right, with a design that will please a great variety of skill levels, and can be enjoyed by families, beginners and avid golfers alike. It is not overly difficult - and is a great "first round" course, assisting players with getting their games together before playing some of the truly tough courses in the Pawleys Island area.
