PEARL GOLF LINKS West Course (910-579-8132)
Myrtle Beach Golf Course Review
General Information
The Pearl Golf Links in Calabash - north of Myrtle Beach, is considered to be one of the gems of Sunset Beach, North Carolina. The property features two 18-hole championship courses that are a fair and fun challenge for all levels of golfers. The owners and management here are dedicated to providing a top level golf experience, as witnessed by the recent renovation of the bent grass greens, updating of the clubhouse, and addition of a new fleet of golf carts.
The clubhouse services both courses and features a fully stocked pro shop and a sports grill and lounge. The comprehensive practice facilities include a targeted grass range, putting greens plus a short game area for chipping practice. Both courses provide yardage marking systems that include disc in the center of the fairways at 100, 150 and 200 yards (plus 250 on par fives). The scorecards have pin placement charts with the greens divided into 3 sectors. Golfers should appreciate the fact that no residential properties are found on either layout.
West Course
The West Course features 5 sets of tee boxes that play to distances and slopes measuring 7006 yards/131 slope, 6736 yards/128 slope, 6419/123 slope, 5821 yards/118 slope and 5188 with a slope of 121 for women hitting from the forward tees. Water hazards in the form of ponds, creeks, natural areas and oyster beds come into play on 16 of the holes.
Sand is an important feature as 60 soft sand bunkers are situated near the landing zones off the tee or are strategically positioned greenside. All green complexes with the exception of the 614 yard par five 14th have at least one sand trap in play. A round here begins along wide open terrain with mounding and undulations gradually building to challenge the strategic abilities of all levels of players.
Tall love grass flanks the fairways on seven of the holes, making accuracy off the tee and on the approach an important factor. There are two par fives of 600 yards plus, and two of the par threes are over 200 yards from the tips. With several par fours over 400 yards in length, golfers will be able to make ample use of the driver on this course.
