GLEN DORNOCH Golf Club (843-249-2541)
Myrtle Beach Golf Course Review
General information
The Glens Golf Group consists of a group of 2 high quality designs, both part of the famous Grand Strand in North Myrtle Beach. Glen Dornoch is a 4 1/2 star course that has been rated Top Ten in Myrtle Beach and one of South Carolina's 25 best and Shaftsbury Glen has been awarded 4 stars.
Glen Dornoch is a 4 1/2 star course that also has earned the following honors: 1997 Links Magazine Feature Challenge Hole, 1997 Golf Digest's Myrtle Beach top 10, 1998 Golf Digest's South Carolina Top 25. Designed by Clyde Johnston in a tribute to Donald Ross, this is a traditional course featuring a natural terrain of lakes, live oaks, and marsh and river spectacular views.
The well maintained fairways are tree lined and mildly rolling, with sod faced bunkers strategically situated near the landing zones and greenside. There are 84 sand traps in total - although with the considerable amount of sandy waste area it seems like much more. Water hazards come into play on 11 of the holes, with some forced carries. The greens are large and undulating, and the entire course is nicely landscaped with pampas and cultivated waste areas.
There are 5 sets of tee areas that play to distances and slopes measuring 6890 yards/145 slope, 6446 yards/137 slope, 6035 yards/125 slope, 5617 yards/116 slope and 5002 yards with a slope of 129 for women playing from the forward tees. On course yardage stakes are situated on both sides of the fairways at 100, 150 and 200m yards and sprinkler heads are also measured to the center of the green. Color coded flags indicate the day's pin placements.
The clubhouse includes a pro shop and restaurant with lounge and patio serving breakfast sandwiches and lunch items. Practice facilities consist of a putting green and targeted grass range. The carts are equipped with rear covers to protect clubs during inclement weather.
This is a beautiful golf experience and is one of the courses we recommend most. Golfers will encounter a wonderful golf environment - and a challenge! There are several carries over marsh and pampas, and those playing from the tips will be confronted with some daunting tee shots.
