Black Bear
Black Bear is an excellent golf value for the Myrtle Beach area, and its central location (not far from the airport and resort areas) makes it one of the region's most requested rounds. As a member of the Classic Golf Group, Black Bear offers consistent conditioning and service as well.
The layout plays along a surprisingly hilly terrain, with rolling fairways that are mostly tree lined but afford plentiful landing zones off the tee. There is a variety here, with some holes playing to wide open playing surfaces that are usually framed by slopes or perimeter mounding. The medium size green complexes are often guarded by sand or water, with putting surfaces that are mild in undulation and slope.
Five sets of tee boxes play to distances and slopes measuring 6787 yards/137 slope, 6181 yards/127 slope, 5555 yards/117 slope, 4861 yards/116 slope and 4686 yards, also with a slope of 116. The course plays tough from the tips, but is quite player friendly from the alternate tees. There are 41 sand bunkers total, and water hazards come into play on 13 holes.
On property is a clubhouse with pro shop, grill room and bar, plus shower areas for both men and women. The outdoor terrace is also available for dining or drinks. Practice facilities include a targeted grass range, putting green plus short game area with multiple sand traps. Golfers are advised (especially first time visitors) to utilize the "strokesaver" booklet that is available in the pro shop - as it provides valuable information with diagrams and yardages.
