Myrtle Beach Golf Course Review
True Blue in Pawleys Island south of Myrtle Beach is a highly acclaimed Mike Strantz design that has been awarded 4-1/2 stars by Golf Digest Places to play. This is one of the region's finest - and is annually ranked near the top of the top 20 courses in the Myrtle Beach area. Golf Magazine named it as one of the Top 100 You can Play, and other awards include: Top 100 Courses for Women (Golf for Women), # 1 Course in the Myrtle Beach Area (Golf Digest), one of "America's Best Modern Courses" (Golf Week), Top 100 Public Courses in America (Golf Digest). The properties' sister course - Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, is as highly acclaimed and is located just across the street, making this the best one-two punch in the region! True Blue features rolling tree lined fairways, with a generous amount of sand waste areas often framing the holes. There are partial concrete cart paths, with golfers often directed to drive through the sand and on the fairways. The design presents plentiful room off the tee, but many of the holes dogleg in one direction or the other, placing a need on accurate location. Trees, water and sand all combine to force golfers to shape their shots to fit the terrain.
The green complexes are often spectacular, both aesthetically and in regards to the degree of challenge. The putting surfaces are long and contoured, demanding accurate approaches towards the correct hole locations - with mistakes leaving long, breaking lag putts that also can result in a 3-putt experience. There is sometimes up to a three club difference, depending upon the location of the flag! Mis-hit approaches will also find the sloping swales and collection areas off the raised greens, affording golfers with some challenges up and down opportunities.
A good sand game is required here, as over 75 sand hazards are situated about the layout. The sandy waste areas often run the entire length of the hole - sometimes framing both sides. Water comes into play on 6 holes - but each time the hazard is daunting, challenging players to finish with the same ball they started with. The par three third features an island green, and the other five holes have water running nearly the entire length, with some risk/reward opportunities present. The group of par threes is excellent, with water and sand creating aesthetic beauty and challenge. The par five 4th is one of our favorite holes, as it doglegs to the left around a lake, and the par four 8th is also gorgeous, as it bends to the right with the fairway shaped by waste bunkers on both sides.
There are 5 sets of tee boxes at True Blue, with distances and slopes measuring 7126 yards145 slope, 6812 yards/141 slope, 6375 yards/127 slope for men and 143 for women, 5736 yards/115 slope for men and 134 fro women, and 4995 yards with a slope of 109 for men and 122 for ladies hitting from the red tee areas. On course sprinkler heads are measured to the center of the green, as are 100, 150 and 200 yard markers on the fairways. Color coded flags indicate the day's pin placements on the sloping putting surfaces.
On property is a full service clubhouse with pro shop, restaurant/lounge, banquet/outing facilities plus a changing room with a shower. Practice facilities are comprehensive, and include a targeted grass range, short game area with sand bunker, plus putting green. The Steve Dresser Golf Academy is also on property - with a separate practice area. Lessons and clinics of all types are available from this renowned instructor - shown in the photo above (to the left) giving a group short game lesson. This facility has been named as one of the Top 25 Golf Schools in America - and golf on true Blue or Caledonia is included in most packages. Club fitting and swing analysis is also available.
