Myrtle Beach Golf Course Review

Shaftesbury Glen Golf & Fish Club - Myrtle Beach Golf

General information

The Glens Golf Group consists of a group of 3 high quality designs, all part of the famous Grand Strand in North Myrtle Beach. Glen Dornach is a 4 1/2 star course that has been rated Top Ten in Myrtle Beach and one of South Carolina's 25 best. Possum Trot's traditional design garners 3 1/2 stars while the newest of the 3 layouts - Shaftsbury Glen has been awarded 4 stars.

Shaftsbury Glen is a Clyde Johnson masterpiece that was inspired by the designs at Winged Foot and Augusta National. The layout highlights features reminiscent of typical courses of the British Isles, with wide flowing fairways and raised bent grass greens, as it winds though forests and farmlands along the Waccamaw River

This manicured layout includes plentiful lakes, marshes and ponds with 13 of the holes having water hazards in play in some shape or form - mostly on the perimeters. There also are 50 sand bunkers located near the landing zones off the tee or situated greenside. The putting surfaces are large and only mildly undulating with open fronts, but are quite raised and often well bunkered.

Golfers will encounter wide, tree lined fairways that present ample targets off the tee, along a very mild terrain with secluded natural areas. The 8th and 9th holes were two of our favorites - the former a par three with water to the left and in front, and the latter a long par four that is the course's # 1 handicap. A creek/marsh cut diagonally in front of the green, creating the need for an accurate approach.

The landscaping and conditioning here are top notch, and the four sets of tees provide golfers of all skill levels with an opportunity to choose a set that fits their game. The tips measure 6935 yards with a 140 slope, while alternate tees play to 6445 yards/135 slope, 5989 yards/128 slope and 4976 yards with a slope of 118.

Yardage markers are posted on both sides of the fairways at 100, 150 and 200 yards, with sprinkler heads also measured to the center of the green. Pin placement info is posted on each scorecard. On property is a clubhouse with pro shop plus restaurant/patio serving breakfast sandwiches and lunch items. Practice facilities include a grass range and putting green. Overnight accommodations in luxury suites are available in the Shaftsbury Glen Manor on property. For more info visit our page for the course, with direct link to their website by clicking here.
