Barefoot Resort & Golf Club - The Dye Course (843-399-7238)
Myrtle Beach Golf Course Review 3/21/08
Barefoot Resort on the Intracoastal Waterway in North Myrtle Beach is a spectacular golf facility boasting 4 spectacular championship courses designed by Pete Dye, Tom Fazio, Davis Love and Greg Norman. The Norman, Fazio and Love courses are all served by the same beautifully appointed clubhouse, which features a pro shop, changing area with shower, and restaurant/lounge. The Dye Clubhouse has similar amenities, and the property also features its own driving range. Both properties have practice greens. The Barefoot Golf Academy is an expansive facility with plentiful grass tees on a targeted range, with a variety of lessons, clinics and instructional programs and packages offered daily. This property also has a restaurant/lounge that is open in the evenings.
The Premier Resort Property features 14 different sections of condo/villa and hotel room accommodations, with a total of 311 units in all. Golfers can book packages for standard rooms, or with one, two, three or four bedroom condos, or golf or yacht club villa accommodations. Each of the condo/villas are fully equipped with kitchen facilities and appliances, dining rooms, living room and patio or balcony. Televisions equipped with cable are provided in each bedroom and in the living area. There are multiple pool areas with the largest swimming pool in the state situated behind the tower complexes. There is a full service 142 slip marina with fuel and ship's store, plus the Dockside Grille – open for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as for cocktails and beverages. A 17,000 square foot meeting/convention center is under construction, as well as a fitness facility. A 4,000 square foot Event Pavillion will be a continuation of the Marina Plaza, and will also offer an outdoor grille, restrooms and a catering kitchen. World Class golf awaits players at Barefoot - with all four courses located right on property. The Love Course was rated the # 1 course in Myrtle Beach by Golf Digest, and with natural marshes, majestic pines, sprawling waste areas and white sand bunkers providing challenge and aesthetic beauty. The Dye Course is a semi-private facility, but is available to guest staying on property at the resort. All four courses have carts with rear weather covers, ball & club washers, and coolers. Pro Link GPS is also standard on all carts, providing accurate information from tee to green. Color coded flags indicate the days hole locations and sprinkler heads on the fairways are also measured to the center of the green.
DYE COURSE
The photos in this review are of the Dye Course, which is the only semi private facility on property, and is known for the typical Dye challenges including elaborate bunkering and undulating green complexes.. There are surprising elevation changes, and some beautiful water features that come into play on 5 holes. We counted about 137 sand traps and sand waste areas, which are strategically situated greenside and consistently define the target zones off the tee. Many of the fairway traps are high lipped and penal in nature. Waste bunkers add defining character and challenge, and can be found lining the fairways on many holes.
The green complexes are medium is size and mild in undulation, but surrounding swales and collection areas make for some tricky up and downs. Penal bunkers (high lipped) can often be found on wither sides of the putting surfaces - and also penalize offline tee shots along the rolling, mounded fairways. Land in one of the deep fairway traps and par opportunities become a scrambling situation. Wind is a factor on this course as well, as many holes are quite open. Partial cart paths mean golfers can usually drive to their ball, making for an efficient round (time-wise). There are many memorable holes, but the long par four 18th, which doglegs to the left around a beautiful lake, is the most spectacular. Four sets of tees play to distances and slopes measuring 7343 yards/149 slope, 6634 yards/132 slope, 6005 yards/129 slope and 5021 yards with a slope of 119 from the forward sets. As the slope ratings indicate, this is a challenging golf experience - especially form the championship tees.
